About

Dr Gabriella Day Medical Homeopath Hampshire  FFHom, MRCGP, DCh, MRCP, MBBS, BSc

I am a practicing GP in Hampshire but began training in homeopathy as it is clear that for many conditions conventional treatment options are not effective and can have unwanted side effects. It seemed to me that there must be another way to help people suffering from symptoms such as these.

I am in easy reach to see patients from Portsmouth, Southampton, Winchester, Andover, Hook, Basingstoke, Chandlers Ford and Romsey.

I believe in whole person medicine. No illness exists in isolation. The human body is immensely sophisticated and complicated and we do not understand it fully. Therefore the illness cannot be separated from the person suffering the disease. This may be as simple as stress impairing the immune system to far more complex interactions.

Homeopathic treatment seeks to match the underlying disturbance in the system and stimulate the body to correct itself.

My registering body is the faculty of homeopathy- the professional body responsible for training medical professionals in homeopathy and for monitoring continuing professional development.

History

I studied medicine at the Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals in London, graduating in 2002 with Merits in Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a Distinction in Pharmacology.  I was awarded the Zeneca Pharmaceutical prize.
I worked as a junior doctor in East London gaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2005.  Hospital Medicine was fascinating, but I wanted to treat the whole person and so I moved into general practice gaining Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2007.
It was not long into my career as a GP that I began to realise the limitations of conventional medicine.  So many people did not fit nicely into particular diagnoses and even amongst those who did the conventional treatment was not always effective and so I began looking for another way.
I achieved membership of the faculty of homeopathy in 2013, having had 2 boys during my training and I have had another since!  Children are also wonderful teachers!
I am a GP of 18 years. Since leaving my partnership I have worked in the Southampton Out of Hours Service and with the Acute Visiting Service, where I feel privileged to have made a difference to those who often find it harder to access General Practice. I have locumed in practices around Hampshire. This experience has given me a ‘birds eye view’ of the state of Primary Care and the variability in provision and patient experience that exists in different areas. It is my considered belief that connexion is fundamental to the Dr-Pt relationship and I strive to maintain this. Knowing the General Practice system as well as I do, I can also help patients to navigate it.

The above varied experience has also culminated in the production of my three books (one now available and two in the pipeline):

In Defence of the Realm

Reclaiming your personal sovereignty

Heartbased Medicine

Resurrecting the Soul in Medicine

Restitution

Rebalancing the Art and Science in Medicine.

As well as bouldering (indoor rock climbing without ropes) with the children I continue to keep up a bit of ballet (a lifelong pastime) and enjoy reading extensively around medicine and psychology.
For me homeopathy is a system of medicine that treats the whole person.  Our mental and emotional state is inseparably involved with the physical and so for true progress both need to be addressed.  Homeopathy is highly individualised and treatment aims to help you not only feel better, but to flourish.

A brief History of Homeopathy

Homeopathy was founded by Samuel Hahnemann in Germany in the 1700's.

Two basic principles are involved.

The principle of similars: which is that a remedy that in large amounts (or material doses) would cause a collection of symptoms, can be used to cure those same symptoms.

Ultra dilution: Hahnemann discovered that the substances he used could be diluted down to a level at which there is none of the original substance left in the remedy, but an action is retained, if the dilution is interspersed with succussion (essentially agitation).

Homeopathy seeks to cure from the inside out. Sometimes this can mean that aggravations of symptoms can occur during treatment, but these aggravations usually indicate a good remedy match and are short-lived and mild.

Homeopathy can be used alongside conventional treatment without interactions and I would always advise you to continue your conventional treatment whilst having homeopathic treatment.

Although homeopathy has now been around and has been found useful for several hundred years, it is only recently that science has begun to discover potential mechanisms for its action. Basic science has now identified that remedies do retain a unique signature depending on the substance used to make them, despite this serial dilution. It has also demonstrated that remedies exert effects on basic living structures and how electromagnetic forces may be responsible for exerting that effect.

A Typical Session

An initial consultation lasts 60-90 minutes. During this time I will seek to obtain as much information as possible about your presenting complaint. To a homeopath the bizarre, unusual or odd symptoms and characteristics (strange, rare and peculiar) of your illness are the most helpful in seeking to find an individualised remedy for you.

For some conditions there is not much about the disease that helps point to a remedy and so it is also useful to obtain further information regarding your constitution. This may include your general likes and dislikes, your tolerance for heat or cold, your moods and triggers to ill health. For this reason you can tell me anything no matter how silly it may seem!

Usually following this I will analyse your case further before prescribing a remedy. I am available for email advice in case of any aggravations from the remedy and usually review after 4 - 6 weeks. Sometimes there is a very positive response to the first remedy, but often further remedies are required and it is useful to have periodic reviews. There are no guarantees that a suitable remedy will be found and there may be various lifestyle changes that may help your symptoms and so I may also discuss these. I may also suggest that you go back to your GP for further investigations if I am concerned about your symptoms.

“It is my aim to ensure that every patient I see feels listened to and empowered to improve their own health.”
